SOURCING GUIDE

What Is rPET Webbing?

The recycled polyester buyers ask about: what it is, what it is not and when it earns its place.

Declared bias

Habby sources certified recycled polyester yarn and weaves rPET webbing on its own looms. We sell this material, so hold our claims to the same standard we recommend below.

What it is

rPET is polyester fiber made from recycled PET, most commonly post-consumer bottles that are collected, cleaned, processed into chips and re-spun into yarn. Woven into webbing, the result behaves like the virgin polyester it chemically is: comparable strength, abrasion resistance and color depth for collar, leash, belt and strap applications.

What it is not

It is not biodegradable; it is still polyester. It is not automatically sustainable; an uncertified “eco” label on a quotation is a claim, not a fact. And it is not always the right answer; for some price-led programs the premium over virgin yarn buys nothing the end customer values.

How to verify an rPET claim

Check What to ask the supplier
Chain of custody Ask for recycled-content certification on the yarn (GRS or RCS scope certificates) and who holds it at each step.
Chemical safety Ask whether the finished webbing is covered by OEKO-TEX Standard 100 testing.
Actual recycled share Ask the certified recycled percentage of the yarn, not of the “collection.”
Weaver or trader Ask who physically weaves the webbing; a trader cannot control what enters the loom.

When it earns its place

rPET earns its premium when the brand tells a sustainability story the end customer can see: EU retail programs, corporate gift lines with ESG reporting, pet and outdoor brands positioned on
responsibility. It struggles to earn it in anonymous, price-led components where no one downstream ever hears the story.

Put rPET where your brand speaks and virgin polyester where only
the price does.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What buyers ask

Is rPET webbing as strong as virgin polyester webbing?
For collar, leash, belt and strap applications, properly produced rPET webbing performs comparably to virgin polyester in strength and abrasion resistance.
Is rPET webbing biodegradable?
No. rPET is still polyester, so it is not biodegradable. Its environmental value comes from using recycled PET as a raw material rather than from breaking down naturally after use.
Does Habby produce rPET webbing?
Yes. Habby sources certified recycled polyester yarn and weaves
rPET webbing on its own looms. Certification and chemical-safety documentation can be planned according to the requirements of the program.
